HOW TO LEARN TO BE ALONE
Work in progress / Director, concept and stage space / 2023
SYNOPSIS
“How to Learn to Be Alone” is a live arts piece and also a survival manual, a small first aid kit for the capacity to imagine. Based on the concept of “desert island”, the piece elaborates a critique of the neoliberal way of life and contemporary isolation. To do so, it uses elements of contemporary theater, dance and installation art.
An enterprising and proactive performer, confined in her small rented apartment, seeks the perfect phrase to justify her isolation: “A SYSTEM OF DESERTED ISLANDS IS A SYSTEM THAT PROTECTS YOU. It’s a beautiful phrase. The good thing about beautiful phrases is that they are easy to frame. They are phrases that make you want to hang them up.”
Inspired by the story of Shoichi Yokoi, the Japanese soldier who remained hidden in a cave for 28 years after the end of World War II, the piece will expose the need to dismantle one’s “own life” and generate new imaginaries, beyond the obligation to resist and the promise of happiness.
Art as a confession of incapacity: joyfully adapting to contemporary life. And art also as a primitive gesture: obsessively digging a well in the hope of finding fresh water, that is, other possibilities.
